Tichu is an engaging multi-genre card game that blends elements of Bridge, Daihinmin, and Poker. It is designed for four players, divided into two teams, with each team member sitting opposite their partner. The objective of the game is for a team to be the first to reach or surpass a predetermined number of points, which are accumulated over multiple hands.
The Tichu deck comprises 56 cards across four suits: Jade, Swords, Pagodas, and Stars. Each suit includes cards ranked from 2 to 10, followed by Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. In addition to these, there are four special cards: the Dragon, the Phoenix, the Hound, and the Mah Jong.
At the beginning of each hand, players are dealt eight cards. At this point, a player may call a "Grand Tichu," a bold 200-point wager that they will be the first to discard all their cards. After any Grand Tichu declarations, the remaining six cards are dealt, and players can no longer call Grand Tichu. However, before playing their first card, a player can call a "Tichu," betting 100 points on being the first to go out. The key differences between Tichu and Grand Tichu are the timing of the call, the number of cards seen, and the points at stake.
Following the complete deal of all 56 cards, with each player holding 14 cards, the game enters the card exchange phase. Each player must pass one card face down to each of the other three players, resulting in a total exchange of three cards given and three received per player.
The player holding the Mah Jong card initiates the first trick, playing any valid combination. Other players can either pass or play a higher combination of the same type. For example, a single card can only be topped by a higher single card, a sequence of two pairs by a higher sequence of two pairs, a seven-card sequence by a higher seven-card sequence, and a full house by a higher full house (where the value of the trio is decisive). Bombs are an exception and will be discussed later. The player who plays the highest combination in a trick collects it and leads the next trick. When a player discards all their cards, they "go out," and the lead passes to the next player on the right (continuing if necessary). The round concludes when both members of a team have gone out, requiring at least two players to finish their hands. A lone player left with cards faces a penalty, surrendering their hand and any tricks they've won to the opponent who went out first.
The game concludes when one team achieves the target score set at the beginning.
