Bethesda Game Studios clarifies its position on why Virtuos' recently launched The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered doesn't qualify as a full remake.
The legendary RPG developer explained the distinction between "remaster" and "remake" in a post on X/Twitter today. The detailed statement outlines Bethesda's philosophy regarding game preservation and modernization. While thanking both returning players and newcomers, the studio made its stance clear: "We never intended to remake it."
"Our goal was to remaster it - preserving the original experience while enhancing it with modern technology," Bethesda stated.
This clarification arrives as players experience Oblivion Remastered for the first time. The release features comprehensive visual upgrades alongside selected gameplay improvements. Notable additions include a sprint function and a refined leveling system that blends elements from both Oblivion and Skyrim.
Although the extensive modifications might suggest a complete remake, Bethesda maintains its classification. While many recent remasters have delivered minimal visual touch-ups, the studio stresses its 2021 project remains fundamentally a remaster at heart.
"We meticulously enhanced every element," Bethesda continued. "But crucially, we preserved the core experience. This remains a game from another era and should feel authentic to that time.
"Longtime fans will rediscover Cyrodiil with fresh eyes, while new players will experience its magic for the first time. We're deeply grateful for our community's unwavering support. Our ambition with this remaster is simple: whether you're a veteran or novice, emerging from the Imperial sewers should feel like that unforgettable first adventure."
