As The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered gains widespread acclaim, speculation mounts about which Bethesda title will receive the remaster treatment next. With rumors swirling about a potential Fallout 3 remaster (following leaks in 2023), how might Bethesda enhance its beloved 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?
Bruce Nesmith, a key designer on Fallout 3, has openly criticized the game's "subpar" firearm mechanics, suggesting this would be a prime area for improvement in any remaster.
In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith predicted Fallout 3 Remastered would adopt Fallout 4's more refined shooting mechanics.
"Fallout 4's combat evolution reveals what needed changing from Fallout 3," Nesmith observed.
"The team implemented significant firearms improvements in Fallout 4 because Fallout 3 marked Bethesda's first attempt at shooter mechanics. Frankly, their subsequent work represents a quantum leap forward."
The Virtuos-developed Oblivion Remastered showcases dramatic visual and gameplay enhancements powered by Unreal Engine 5. Beyond expected 4K/60fps performance, it delivers meaningful upgrades across leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and UI. Additional dialogue, refined third-person perspective, and advanced lip-sync technology have led some fans to argue it qualifies as a remake - though Bethesda maintains its classification as a remaster.
Nesmith expects Fallout 3 Remastered would follow Oblivion's modernization blueprint.
"Fallout 3's combat couldn't compete with contemporary shooters at launch," he admitted. "Being an RPG-first shooter compounds this. But Fallout 4 demonstrated Bethesda's capacity for meaningful gunplay evolution - that progress would logically carry over."
"Oblivion's remaster didn't merely match Skyrim's 2011 standard," he continued. "Visually, it surpasses even Skyrim's current-gen upgrades." Nesmith likens the overhaul to receiving "Oblivion 2.0."
Bethesda's ambitious slate includes The Elder Scrolls VI, potential Starfield expansions, ongoing Fallout 76 updates, and the Fallout TV series' New Vegas-focused second season - ensuring years of content for fans.
