In *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, one of the standout gameplay mechanics is the return of duels, a feature that first appeared in *Dynasty Warriors 4*. While you won’t be able to participate in duels during the early hours of the game, the ability to challenge opponents in one-on-one combat becomes available starting in Chapter 2. However, duels are not open to all enemies; you can only challenge high-ranking and prominent officers. When such an officer appears, you'll have a brief window to initiate a duel by pressing both the R1 and L1 buttons simultaneously.
Once a duel begins, an arena forms around you and your opponent, setting the stage for a focused, one-on-one battle. Unlike standard combat, duels feature a unique meter at the top of the screen, representing both you and your opponent. Landing hits on your opponent advances your portion of the meter, while their successful strikes advance theirs. The objective is to fill the entire meter by damaging your opponent sufficiently.
Your starting position on the duel meter is influenced not by your health, but by your overall morale. If you're winning battles, your meter starts more filled; if you're losing, your opponent's meter will be larger. In the heat of a duel, it's crucial to observe your opponent’s moves, dodge and parry effectively, and maintain a safe distance, especially if they are using Battle Arts. Remember, time is limited, but there's no need for recklessness.
Victory in a duel grants you a significant advantage: you deal massive damage to your opponent and receive a substantial morale boost. Conversely, losing a duel results in heavy damage to yourself and a morale drop for your army, which can be disastrous in the later stages of a battle. If neither side wins, the duel ends without repercussions, and the game continues as usual. However, some duels are unavoidable and critical; losing these results in mission failure, while winning them secures an automatic victory. Therefore, initiating a duel can dramatically shift the tide of battle, but underestimating your opponent can lead to your downfall.
And that’s how duels work in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*.
*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
