Frostpunk 1886: Official Announcement
Original Frostpunk Rebuilt in Unreal Engine
11 bit Studios, the developer behind Frostpunk, announced an unexpected new series entry. Through a Twitter (X) post on April 24, they introduced Frostpunk 1886—a complete Unreal Engine-powered remake of the original game.
The studio confirmed the inclusion of an entirely new Purpose Path, highly requested mod support, and additional features—all while preserving the core experience that defined the first game. Developers elaborated further in a concurrent Steam post, outlining the project’s key objectives.
Moving away from their proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered the first Frostpunk, 11 bit Studios is embracing Unreal Engine—the same technology used for Frostpunk 2. Recognizing the creative potential Unreal offers, the team decided to revisit the original vision with enhanced capabilities. As they explained, “Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer.”
Planned Launch in 2027

Additionally, the team confirmed that Frostpunk 1886 is now in active development, targeting a 2027 launch. The project aims to welcome newcomers into the chilling world of Frostpunk while delivering a deep, replayable experience for established fans.
The studio also teased plans for future DLC and new content, signaling a shift toward more frequent game releases. Frostpunk 1886 marks the start of this new approach. In the meantime, players can look forward to Frostpunk 2’s major free update on May 8, a summer console launch, and more—as outlined in the official roadmap.
Frostpunk 2 is currently available on PC, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions arriving this summer. Stay informed with the latest updates by checking our related coverage below.
