Sony has exciting news for PlayStation fans with the announcement of a new studio, teamLFG, and a sneak peek at its first game. In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was born out of Bungie, the creators of Destiny and Marathon. The studio is currently working on an ambitious project that has Hulst buzzing with excitement.
The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' hints at the studio's focus on social gaming. Their debut game is set to be a team-based action title, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and even "frog-type games." The game will immerse players in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.
teamLFG's mission is to foster games where players can find friendship, community, and a sense of belonging. They envision a gaming experience where players log on to find their teammates already online, building memories and creating legends with each match. The studio aims to craft immersive multiplayer worlds that players can learn, play, and master over countless hours. They plan to involve the community from the start, inviting players to participate in early access playtests and stay responsive to feedback both before and after launch to ensure a thriving live service.

This incubation project from teamLFG was spun out of Bungie during significant layoffs in 2023 and 2024, which affected approximately 320 employees. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie faced challenges in meeting financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to these layoffs and the integration of some staff into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during this period that the incubation project was announced.
In related news, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's involvement in pushing through improvements to Destiny 2. Recently, Bungie unveiled the extraction shooter Marathon and shared the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, plans for Destiny 3 have been shelved, and a Destiny spinoff called Payback has been canceled.
