Sony is expanding its family-friendly game portfolio following Astro Bot's remarkable performance. Discover how this platformer's achievements are reshaping PlayStation's strategy and reviving classic franchises.
PlayStation Expands Family-Friendly Gaming Initiatives
Astro Bot Surpasses 1.5 Million Units Sold
Since its September 2024 launch, Astro Bot has achieved phenomenal success, selling over 1.5 million copies and claiming Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. This performance has prompted PlayStation to prioritize similar family-oriented projects going forward.
At Sony's Q3 2025 earnings call on February 13, President, CEO and CFO Hiroki Totoki reflected on Astro Bot's critical acclaim, including its four Game Awards wins (Game of the Year and Best Family Game among them). He also highlighted Helldivers 2's achievements in the Best Ongoing and Multiplayer categories.
"These awards represent significant progress in our strategy to diversify our game portfolio, particularly in family entertainment and live service titles," Totoki stated regarding PlayStation's evolving content strategy.
PlayStation's Family Gaming Heritage
While PlayStation boasts a rich history with family-friendly franchises, many like Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, and Jak and Daxter have remained dormant for years. With Activision properties like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro now under Xbox, Ratchet & Clank and LittleBigPlanet remain PlayStation's primary active family franchises alongside the newly successful Astro Bot.
In a December 2024 Famitsu interview, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst emphasized Astro Bot's importance: "Astro represents something very special for PlayStation. What's remarkable is how a compact development team created such an expansive experience that's become both an exceptional standalone title and a celebration of PlayStation history."
Reviving Classic PlayStation IPs
Astro Bot's inclusion of nostalgic PlayStation references may signal broader franchise revivals. Hulst previously noted: "Our extensive IP catalog represents valuable assets. We continuously evaluate opportunities to both revive classic properties and develop new franchises."
The recent Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater trailer's Ape Easter egg (referencing the original Snake vs. Monkey minigame) and Sly Cooper's PlayStation Store resurgence suggest potential renewed interest in legacy properties.
