Shuhei Yoshida, the former president of Worldwide Studios for Sony Interactive Entertainment, recently shared two of the most frightening moments from his extensive career at PlayStation. In a conversation with MinnMax, Yoshida highlighted the launch of the Xbox 360 as a particularly terrifying event. The Xbox 360 hit the market a year before the PlayStation 3, which left Sony's console at a significant disadvantage as gamers eager for next-gen experiences had to wait longer for Sony's offering.
However, the most shocking moment for Yoshida came from an unexpected competitor—Nintendo. The announcement that Monster Hunter 4 would be exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS came as a massive surprise. Yoshida noted, "That was the biggest shock I had from an announcement from the competition." Monster Hunter had previously been a massive success on the PlayStation Portable, with two exclusive titles, making Nintendo's coup even more impactful. To compound the shock, Nintendo also drastically reduced the price of the 3DS by $100, setting it at a much more competitive $150 compared to the PlayStation Vita's $250.
Monster Hunter 4 launched exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate following a year later. The exclusivity and the price cut of the 3DS were major blows to Sony, as Yoshida recounted, "I was like, 'Oh my god'. And [then they] announced the biggest game... The biggest game on PSP was Monster Hunter. And that game is going to come out on Nintendo 3DS exclusively. I was like, 'Oh no.' That was the biggest shock."
After over three decades with Sony, Yoshida retired in January, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved figure in the PlayStation community. His departure has allowed him to share previously untold stories and insights, including his views on Sony's live service push and the potential for a Bloodborne remake or sequel.
