Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, has recently announced the much-anticipated update 1.1.1, aimed at enhancing the gameplay experience of the newly released strategy game. Despite its launch, Civilization 7 has seen fewer players on Steam compared to its predecessors, Civilization 6 and the 15-year-old Civilization 5. On Valve's platform, Civilization 7's 24-hour peak player count stands at 16,921, which falls short of the top 100 most-played games. In contrast, Civilization 5, launched in 2010, recorded a 24-hour peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6, released in 2016, boasted a significantly higher peak of 40,676 players, indicating a strong preference among fans for the earlier titles.
In a detailed post on Steam, Firaxis outlined the key "additions and refinements" that players can expect with the release of Update 1.1.1. These include:
- Quick Move Functionality
- New Natural Wonder: Mount Everest
- Additional UI Updates & Polish
- Settlement & Commander Renaming
- And more!
Lead designer Ed Beach provided a comprehensive overview of these changes in a video, while pointing players towards the full patch notes, which are set to be released soon.
Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:
----------------------------------------The Quick Move feature is now an optional setting that can be toggled in the game's menu, allowing units to reach their destinations instantly for a faster gameplay experience.
A new start position option has been introduced in relation to map generation. The default setting for single-player games is now "Standard," designed to emulate the varied and less predictable continents of Civilization 6. For multiplayer games, the "Balanced" setting remains in place to ensure a level playing field with more consistent map layouts.
Players can now rename their settlements and commanders, offering a personalized touch to their civilizations. Additionally, a new feature allows players to restart the game with a single click to achieve the ideal first settlement, using new map seeds while retaining the same leader and civilization selections as in Civilization 6.
User interface improvements include a persistent city and town panel during purchases, a new notification for cities under attack, updated crisis indicators, and enhanced resource tooltips. The update also brings significant changes to game pacing.
Alongside these updates, the paid Crossroads of the World Collection introduces Bulgaria as a new civilization, joining Nepal and the new leader Simón Bolívar, available starting March 25.

Civilization 7 has sparked controversy among long-time fans due to its new mechanics and has struggled to gain traction on Steam, where player numbers are public. The game currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating on Valve's platform and received a 7/10 from IGN's review.
In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback from both press and players but remained optimistic, suggesting that the "legacy Civ audience" would eventually embrace the game as they spend more time with it. He described Civilization 7's early performance as "very encouraging." There's also a hint that fan-favorite leader Gandhi might make a return.
