Following the Academy's announcement of a new Oscar category for Stunt Design, actor Tom Hardy has raised concerns about whether a single award sufficiently honors this complex field.
In an exclusive IGN interview promoting his upcoming film Havoc, Hardy stated: "While one Oscar category is progress, it feels somewhat overdue. It's a positive step, but the recognition should extend further."
"Stunt Design alone can't encompass the full spectrum of stunt work," continued the acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road star. "Design is just one component - we're talking about dozens of specialized disciplines deserving recognition. From equestrian work to high falls, vehicular stunts to underwater sequences, these professionals risk their safety to create cinematic magic."

Hardy's perspective resonates with Havoc director Gareth Evans, known for his groundbreaking action sequences in The Raid films. Evans commented: "While additional categories would be welcome, the true value lies in proper acknowledgment of this art form. These artists have shaped cinema's most memorable moments for decades - it's baffling this recognition took nearly a century."
The Stunt Design Oscar will debut at the 2028 Academy Awards, marking 100 years since the Oscars began. Fans won't need to wait nearly as long to see Hardy in action - Havoc premieres on Netflix this Friday, April 25th, featuring the actor in another intense performance.
