Fans of the Star Wars universe can look forward to an exciting new addition directed by Shawn Levy, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Deadpool & Wolverine. While details about the film remain largely under wraps, writer Jonathan Tropper has recently shared his enthusiasm, hinting that the project might be progressing faster than anticipated. "I am [excited] too," Tropper told Screen Rant. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
Set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, Levy's film will explore the Star Wars universe in a new era, approximately five to six years post the saga's conclusion. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has positioned this film as a standalone story within the franchise's timeline, marking it as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker period.
In discussions with Deadline, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, scheduled for 2026. This places Levy's project on the calendar for at least the last quarter of 2026, if not into 2027. Adding to the anticipation, Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film, bringing his star power to the galaxy far, far away.
The Star Wars franchise has seen a gap in its cinematic releases since Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, with Disney canceling several planned projects in the interim, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie previously slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's release schedule in November.
Every Upcoming Star Wars Movie and TV Show
At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for three new feature films. Dave Filoni will direct a New Republic film set within his Mando-verse, James Mangold is set to helm Dawn of the Jedi, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct a New Jedi Order movie featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced some changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a central figure in Disney's future plans for Star Wars, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming films.
Moreover, Disney's Star Wars slate continues to expand. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy that will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier rumors.
Fans won't have to wait long for more Star Wars content, as Season 2 of Andor is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on April 22, featuring a triple-episode launch to kick off the season.
