The debut trailer for Predator: Badlands has certainly raised intriguing questions among fans, particularly regarding the redesigned Predator.
In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, director Dan Trachtenberg shared fresh insights about Predator: Badlands, including his innovative approach to the iconic sci-fi hunter.
The new Predator, named Dek and portrayed by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, breaks tradition as an underdog protagonist rather than the franchise's typical antagonist. Described as a Yautja "runt," Dek represents a departure from previous Predator portrayals.
Dek's story unfolds on Kalisk, a deadly planet he chooses as his proving ground to gain his father's approval and status within his clan.
The character design notably differs from previous Predators, featuring more human-like traits and a smaller stature consistent with his underdog role.
While Dek's journey forms the film's core, he's joined by Elle Fanning's mysterious character whose synthetic appearance – complete with Weyland-Yutani corporation markings – suggests potential ties to the Alien universe.
Trachtenberg revealed their dynamic drew inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus' poignant relationships. "Like Shadow of the Colossus' protagonist and his horse, we wanted Dek to have an emotionally resonant counterpart who contrasts perfectly with him," the director explained.
The filmmaker remained coy about the Alien connections and Fanning's character specifics. "Their partnership holds unique surprises I want audiences to discover," he teased.
Predator: Badlands arrives November 7, 2025, preceded by Trachtenberg's animated anthology Predator: Killer of Killers this June.
