Excitement is building as Bethesda is reportedly on the brink of unveiling a much-anticipated remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. According to the reliable insider NatetheHate, who previously nailed the announcement timing for the Nintendo Switch 2, the reveal could happen as early as this month or next month. This information has been backed up by VGC, adding further credibility to the imminent announcement.
The release timeline for the Oblivion remake remains somewhat unclear. NatetheHate suggests a launch before June, whereas VGC hints at a potential release as soon as April. Fans of the iconic RPG series are eagerly awaiting more details.
Back in January, Mp1st shed light on some intriguing details about the remake after they were accidentally disclosed by a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio. When IGN reached out to Microsoft for a comment, they declined to provide any statements.
According to Mp1st, Virtuos has utilized Unreal Engine 5 to completely revamp Bethesda's beloved open-world role-playing game, suggesting a comprehensive remake rather than a simple remaster. The report also mentioned several gameplay changes, including modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD).
Notably, the Blocking system has been redesigned with inspiration from action games and Soulslikes, aiming to address the original system's "boring" and "frustrating" aspects. Sneak icons are now reportedly highlighted, with damage calculations revamped. The effect of depleting Stamina, which leads to a knockdown, is said to be harder to trigger. Additionally, the HUD has been streamlined for better clarity, hit reactions have been introduced for more responsive gameplay, and Archery has been updated for both first and third-person perspectives.

Rumors of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023 during the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Documents from the trial unveiled a list of unannounced Bethesda projects planned for future release, compiled in July 2020. This list included an Oblivion Remaster targeted for financial year 2022, alongside other titles such as an Indiana Jones game.
While many projects on the list faced delays or cancellations, the Oblivion project has evolved. Initially labeled as a remaster, it appears Bethesda may have expanded its scope to a full-fledged remake. As we await official confirmation, this remains one of the gaming industry's worst-kept secrets.
Regarding platform availability, Microsoft's current strategy focuses on multiplatform releases. With the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, the Oblivion remake could potentially extend its reach beyond PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. If the Switch 2 launches around June, the Oblivion remake might be part of its initial lineup, broadening the game's accessibility to a wider audience.
