Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has reassured fans that it's not abandoning the game for its next project, known as "Game 6." Following the game's successful launch and the full-scale Illuminate invasion, CEO Shams Jorjani addressed concerns in the official Helldivers Discord. He emphasized that the company's bright future, thanks to fan support, allows them to explore new concepts. However, he clarified that Helldivers 2 remains their primary focus, with only a small team slowly working on Game 6 later this year.
Jorjani stated that as long as players continue to engage and purchase Super Credits, content updates for Helldivers 2 will continue. He admitted that last summer was challenging, but with the community's support, Arrowhead turned things around and is optimistic about the future.
In response to a fan's request for Arrowhead's next game to be available in all regions, Jorjani revealed that Game 6 will be 100% self-funded, indicating that Arrowhead will have full control over its distribution. This also suggests that Game 6 won't be Helldivers 3, as it's not tied to Sony or any other publisher.
Discussing the development process, Jorjani explained that Arrowhead aims to perfect the core elements of Game 6 early on, a lesson learned from the eight-year development of Helldivers 2. He stressed the importance of extensive playtesting to ensure the game is fun from the start.
Arrowhead's commitment to Helldivers 2 aligns with previous statements from the team, who want the game to thrive for years. Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever, with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. Despite challenges like the PSN account requirements on Steam and fluctuating community reactions to game updates, Arrowhead remains dedicated.
Alex Bolle, production director on Helldivers 2, told IGN that the team is motivated to keep the game true to its fantasy while continuously innovating. He highlighted the excitement of adapting new ideas and systems to the game, ensuring that Helldivers 2 remains engaging and true to its identity for the foreseeable future.
Recent leaks, including one from PlayStation, suggest that Super Earth will soon be a playable map, adding to the anticipation as the Illuminate invasion reaches our home planet.
