The Elder Scrolls Online finally delivers a heavily requested feature with the introduction of subclasses to the game. Discover how this system works and what future updates players can expect.
Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates
Over 3000 Skill Line Combinations

The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) celebrates its 10th anniversary with significant updates from Zenimax Online Studios. During ESO Direct 2025 on April 10, developers announced the arrival of subclassing - a feature players have eagerly anticipated for years.
Players have long requested class flexibility. Currently, exploring new skill trees requires creating fresh characters - a tedious process in an MMO. The new subclass system allows mixing skill lines without character rerolls.

To access subclasses, players must reach level 50. They'll retain one skill line from their base class while swapping two others from any available class, creating over 3000 potential combinations for personalized playstyles.
Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the feature after extensive testing: "While we anticipate some power creep, we're comfortable with the current balance."
Seasons of the Worm Cult

ZeniMax Online transitions to seasonal content updates, allowing more experimental releases and quicker response to player feedback.
Studio Director Matt Firor explained: "Seasonal content lets us maintain compelling storytelling while introducing fresh gameplay systems and mechanics at a measured pace."

The new chapter, Seasons of the Worm Cult, continues ESO's Molag Bal narrative after nearly a decade. Players will explore the Isle of Solstice to investigate the Worm Cult's resurgence.
Producer Susan Kath noted: "While this season spans most of 2025, future seasons will typically run 3-6 months." Developers plan "remix seasons" revisiting past stories, hinting at an upcoming Dark Brotherhood-themed season.
