Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant
Toby Fox, creator of Undertale and Deltarune, recently shared a development update in his newsletter. While Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 are targeted for simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4, the launch date remains unannounced.
Chapter 4 is nearing completion. All maps are finished, battles are playable, but polishing remains. Minor adjustments include refining two cutscenes, balancing and visually enhancing one battle, improving a background for another, and enhancing the ending sequences of two more. Despite this, Fox considers Chapter 4 largely playable and has received positive feedback from testers.
The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges. Fox notes the added complexity of a paid release compared to the free Chapters 1 and 2, necessitating meticulous attention to detail.
The team's current priorities include:
- Testing new features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Comprehensive bug testing
Chapter 3 development is complete (as per Fox's February newsletter). Early work on Chapter 5, including map creation and bullet pattern design, is already underway.
The newsletter offered glimpses of upcoming content, including Ralsei and Rouxls dialogue, an Elnina character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. While the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has been frustrating for fans, the anticipation is high, fueled by Fox's confirmation that Chapters 3 and 4 combined will surpass the length of Chapters 1 and 2. Fox anticipates a smoother release schedule for future chapters following the release of Chapters 3 and 4.
