Borderlands 4 Nears Its Release Date
Photo Mode to Arrive in a Post-Launch Update
Borderlands 4 will include a photo mode, though it will only become available after the game's initial release. In a June 25 post on Twitter (X), Creative Director Graeme Timmins explained that the feature was originally intended for launch but was deprioritized as the team concentrated on other, more critical components of the game.
In a subsequent comment, Timmins added, "I decided we should focus on polishing other elements that are more central to the moment-to-moment gameplay. We always intended to include it and had it scheduled; we just needed to allocate more time to elements that would directly improve the quality of life while playing."
The previous game, Borderlands 3, launched with photo mode in 2019, although console versions received the feature later. The developers have considered community feedback from the last installment and have worked to incorporate those requests.
More recently, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford shared that the team added a highly requested feature at the last moment. On June 20, Pitchford announced via Twitter (X) that a combat radar will be available for players seeking additional assistance during gameplay.
This tool helps players gain better spatial awareness and detect enemies across the battlefield. However, it must be enabled in the settings menu, as the combat radar is turned off by default.
Pitchford emphasized how valuable community feedback has been for the game's development and thanked "the genuine fans who sincerely want the best for the game and provided constructive feedback and well-reasoned arguments."
New Official Story Trailer Unveiled at Borderlands Fan Fest
During the Borderlands Fan Fest on June 21, Gearbox and 2K Games debuted a new story trailer that outlines the game's setting and core narrative. The two-minute video provided an overview of the player's journey on the planet Kairos.
The plot centers on The Timekeeper and his Order's oppressive rule over Kairos. Vault Hunters must lead a revolution to overthrow this regime. With support from Claptrap and the Crimson Resistance, players will gather allies, secure resources, and do whatever it takes to liberate the planet's inhabitants.

In contrast to Borderlands 3, this installment adopts a more serious tone, reducing comedic elements and delivering more grounded dialogue. It will be intriguing to see how the developers pivot from their usual "meme-style" approach, especially given the story's totalitarian setting and weightier consequences.
Borderlands 4 is scheduled for release on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. For the latest updates and information, check out our article below!
