Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: operating as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence originates from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC shared new findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at potential mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers aren't listed in public component databases, suggesting they represent unreleased products. The reported 90 x 90mm size of the tape suggests it's large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While innovative for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, allows its right controller to function as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to aid smooth surface movement.
The Legion GO also features magnetic controller rails—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity further strengthens the speculation regarding the Switch 2's design and potential features.
