While Nintendo remains tight-lipped about the Switch 2's official specs, recent patent filings have all but confirmed significant upgrades to the Joy-Cons. Reports suggesting magnetic attachment and mouse functionality are now substantiated by these documents.
Nintendo's patent application describes a game controller with magnetic mounting to a console featuring a recessed area containing two magnets. The Joy-Cons attach via these magnets and require the simultaneous pressing of two buttons for detachment. The patent explicitly states: "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." The buttons, positioned longitudinally on the controller's top surface, are magnetically attracted to their respective magnets in the console.
Furthermore, the patent illustrates the Joy-Cons functioning as a computer mouse. Holding the controller upside down, the R1 and R2 buttons simulate left and right mouse clicks, while joystick movement potentially provides scrolling capabilities. Illustrations depict both dual-mouse and hybrid configurations (one Joy-Con as a mouse, the other as a standard controller).
