Pesten With Cards is a classic Dutch card game that literally means Bullying With Cards. It shares similarities with games like Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Shedding, Puque, Чешский Дурак, Фараон, Крокодил, Tschau Sepp, and Uno, which are played in various countries. The main objective of Pesten With Cards is to be the first player to get rid of all their cards. A crucial rule is that the winner must say "Last Card" before playing their final card; failure to do so results in a penalty of picking up two additional cards.
The game can be played with multiple decks of cards, including jokers. Each player starts with 7 cards, and the remaining cards form a face-down stock or stack. The top card of the stock is turned face up to start the discard pile. Players then take turns playing cards in a clockwise direction. If a "Pest-card" is the first card revealed, the dealer must execute its effect as if they had played it.
During a player's turn, they must play a card that matches either the number or suit of the top card on the discard pile. Jokers and Jacks are exceptions and can be played on any card. If a player cannot play a card, they must draw one from the stock. If the drawn card can be played, the player can choose to play it immediately or keep it in their hand.
Last Card
When a player has only one card left after playing, they must say "Last Card" by clicking the "Last Card" button above their cards. This alerts other players that they are close to winning. Forgetting to say "Last Card" before playing the final card results in a penalty of two cards and the last card not being played. Saying "Last Card" incorrectly also incurs a two-card penalty. Players can press the "Last Card" button at any time, even out of turn, to ensure they remember to say it before playing their last card.
If a player successfully plays their last card and it is not a special card, they win the round.
Special Cards
Special cards in Pesten With Cards have unique actions based on their number or type. The actions can vary in the Netherlands, but the game allows for configuration of these actions in the game options. The following are the standard actions for special cards:
Joker: The next player must draw 5 cards. If they have a joker, they can play it, causing the following player to draw 10 cards. Each additional joker played adds 5 more cards to be drawn. Players who draw cards cannot play them immediately; the next player must take their turn.
Two: The next player must draw 2 cards. If they have a two, they can play it, making the next player draw 4 cards. Each additional two adds 2 more cards to be drawn. If enabled, a joker can be played on a two, adding 5 cards to the draw. A two cannot be played on a joker. Players who draw cards cannot play them immediately.
Seven: The player must play another card. If unable to do so, they must draw a card. Remember to say "Last Card" if applicable when playing a seven.
Eight: The next player skips their turn, and the player after that plays. In a two-player game, this allows the player to play another card (similar to the seven).
Ten: All players must pass one card from their hand to the player on their left. Players click on the card they wish to pass.
