Palace, a classic card game also known as Shed, Karma, or "OG," was a staple in my high school's study hall and cafeteria back in the 90s. Its popularity extends beyond schoolyards; it's also favored among backpackers, making it a widely recognized game.
The latest version, 3.1.6, released on August 7, 2024, includes SDK updates to enhance the gaming experience. Additionally, new features have been added based on user feedback, including the ability to pick up cards from the pile at any time and the rule that a 7 forces a lower card to be played. Players can now enjoy the game with friends, adding a social element to the fun.
In Palace, you can play against eight unique computer characters, each with distinct playing styles, or challenge your friends in live matches. Here’s how the game works:
Each player starts with three 'face down cards,' which remain unseen and unchanged until the game's end. On top of these, three 'face up cards' are placed. Finally, each player receives three cards to form their hand. You have the option to switch cards between your hand and your face up cards before the game begins.
The game kicks off with the player holding the lowest card, typically a 3. On each turn, you must discard one or more cards of the same rank that are greater than or equal to the top card on the pick-up pile. After discarding, draw cards from the deck to maintain at least three cards in your hand, unless the deck is depleted or you already have three or more cards.
Special rules apply to certain cards: 2's and 10's are wild. A 2 resets the pile, while a 10 clears it. Four cards of the same rank, like four 10's, also clear the pile. If you can't play a card higher than or equal to the top card of the pile or use a wild card, you must pick up the entire pile.
Once you've played all the cards in your hand and the deck is empty, you move on to your face up cards. After those are gone, you play your face down cards. The first player to discard all their cards wins the game.
With its engaging gameplay and new social features, Palace remains a beloved card game that continues to bring people together, whether in person or online.
