Nonograms, also known as Hanjie, Griddlers, Picross, Japanese Crosswords, Japanese Puzzles, Pic-a-Pix, "Paint by numbers," and other names, are captivating picture logic puzzles. In these puzzles, you color or leave blank cells in a grid according to numbers provided at the sides, revealing a hidden image. These numbers represent discrete tomography, indicating the number of unbroken lines of filled squares in any given row or column. For instance, a clue like "4 8 3" indicates sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, respectively, with at least one blank cell separating each group.
Solving a Nonogram involves determining which cells to fill (known as boxes) and which to leave empty (known as spaces). Both are crucial, as spaces help pinpoint where a clue's block of boxes can extend. Solvers often mark cells they are sure are spaces with dots or crosses.
A key rule is to avoid guessing; only cells that logic dictates should be filled. A single incorrect guess can spread errors across the entire puzzle, spoiling the solution.
