In the early stages of *Avowed*'s main quest, the Envoy becomes the victim of a tragic assassination. After unraveling the mystery of their own murder, you'll discover that Ygwulf, a member of the Paradisan Rebels, is responsible. The rebels are fiercely opposed to Aedyr's presence, making the Envoy, a representative of the emperor, a prime target. As you progress, you'll track down Ygwulf to his underground hideout, navigating through numerous enemies and platforming challenges. Make sure to equip yourself with ample Health Potions and the best gear available.
Throughout the dungeon, you may come across documents that shed light on Ygwulf's true intentions and his remorse. Initially driven by what he believed were divine commands to kill the Envoy, Ygwulf eventually realizes his visions were misguided. He expresses regret for his actions, offering himself up for justice when confronted. This pivotal moment gives you the choice between mercy or vengeance.
What Happens If You Spare Ygwulf or He Turns Himself In?
Opting for Ygwulf to turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote is the least favorable choice. He would face a brutal and painful death at the hands of Inquisitor Lödwyn, and this option yields fewer rewards compared to sparing him or killing him directly. If you choose to spare Ygwulf, he will offer you 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra as a token of gratitude. Although this isn't a substantial amount, it can be useful. However, sparing him doesn't change his ultimate fate, as he will still meet his demise later in the story.
Why You Should Kill Ygwulf in Avowed
Given that Ygwulf's death is inevitable, choosing to attack him during your confrontation is the most beneficial decision. This choice leads to a boss fight, providing valuable practice for future encounters in *Avowed*. Defeating Ygwulf also grants the best loot among the available options. Upon his defeat, you can loot his body for currency, Adra, and his unique Blackwing armor set. Not only does the Blackwing armor look impressive, but it also offers significant advantages, including a +30% damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% movement speed increase when crouching, enhancing your ability to sneak past enemies.
Does Ygwulf’s Fate Affect the Story in Avowed?
Despite Ygwulf being introduced early in the game, his fate subtly influences the ending of *Avowed*. After the final gameplay section, the game presents art and narration that illustrate how your decisions impact the world of Eora in the Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to unify and pacify the Living Lands, Ygwulf's death will always occur, fueling the radicalization of the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring their continued violent resistance post-credits.
