The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 is set to premiere on May 4, 2025, in an exclusive reveal at IGN Fan Fest 2025, marking a highly anticipated return for fans of the post-apocalyptic drama.
During Day 2 of the event, IGN unveiled an exclusive clip and hosted a special interview with key figures from the series, including Scott Gimple, chief content officer of The Walking Dead universe, Lauren Cohan (Maggie), and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan).
Lauren Cohan offered insight into Maggie’s emotional and psychological state heading into the second season. “Sadly, not everything is quite as rosy as it could be or seems or one would hope,” she shared, highlighting the complexities of family dynamics in a fractured world.
She elaborated on the relatable domestic challenges Maggie faces, balancing motherhood with survival. “My son is still a teenage boy, and there are natural tensions that come with navigating family life. And now I have Ginny in my care—a teenage girl—so those everyday family dynamics are very much present, even amid the chaos of an apocalyptic world where the basics—food, safety, sleep—are still a daily struggle. That’s where we find ourselves… right before another major crisis unfolds.”
Jeffrey Dean Morgan provided a glimpse into Negan’s evolving journey, a character who has transformed from villain to fan favorite. “We find Negan very much under the thumb of The Dama and The Croat, in a position he’s not at all comfortable with,” Morgan explained.
“He’s going to try to flip the script—because that’s what Negan does—but at the start of the season, he’s in a place he’s not enjoying. He’s struggling, scheming, always calculating how to regain control, but he’s definitely in a tough spot.”
Morgan also reflected on Negan’s iconic weapon—Lucille, the barbed-wire-wrapped baseball bat named after his late wife. “The Lucille of it all—what can I say? I love that thing,” he said. “As an actor, it’s the only prop I’ve ever had in my entire career that I genuinely enjoy carrying around. It brought back some really fond memories for me… though not so much for Lauren!”
Scott Gimple expanded on the overarching conflict in Season 2, emphasizing a shift in narrative tone. “There is no single big bad,” he revealed. “This season features a constantly shifting power dynamic. The tension isn’t purely antagonistic—it’s more layered, more political, and then, of course, it gets physical.”
IGN also shared the opening minutes of the Season 2 premiere, giving fans an early look at the drama and intensity to come.
