Valorant's New Anti-Cheat Measures: Ranked Rollbacks to Combat Cheaters
Valorant is escalating its fight against cheaters with a significant update: ranked rollbacks. This new anti-cheat measure reverses the rank progression or rank itself for players whose matches were compromised by hackers. The goal is to deter cheating and ensure fair gameplay for all Valorant players. Importantly, players who were unfortunately teamed with cheaters will retain their rank rating, preventing unfair penalties for legitimate players.
The recent surge in cheating activity prompted Riot Games to announce these stricter measures. Phillip Koskinas, Riot's head of anti-cheat, publicly acknowledged the problem and emphasized the studio's commitment to resolving it, stating that Riot's capabilities to combat cheating have significantly increased. He shared data illustrating the substantial number of cheaters banned by Valorant's Vanguard anti-cheat system in January alone, highlighting a peak on January 13th.
Ranked Rollbacks: How They Work
Addressing concerns about players winning matches with cheaters on their team, Koskinas clarified that while the opposing team will have their rank rating restored, players who played alongside cheaters will not lose rank. While this approach might temporarily inflate rankings, Riot believes it's a necessary step to address the issue effectively.
Valorant's Vanguard system, known for its kernel-level access to PCs, has a proven track record of success in identifying and banning cheaters. Its effectiveness has even inspired similar anti-cheat implementations in other popular games like Call of Duty. Despite past successes in driving cheaters away, the persistent nature of cheating necessitates ongoing adaptation and stronger countermeasures.
With thousands of players already banned in previous efforts, Riot Games demonstrates a strong commitment to eliminating cheating from Valorant. The long-term effectiveness of the new ranked rollback system remains to be seen, but it represents a significant step in the ongoing battle against unfair play.
