Legendary actor Tom Cruise has truly embodied the word "impossible" throughout the Mission: Impossible series, and he's raising the stakes even higher for the eighth installment, Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning. Interestingly, Cruise shared that director Christopher McQuarrie envisioned some seemingly unattainable stunts for the new film. To show just how demanding they were, Cruise had McQuarrie attempt one himself.
"We discussed the storyline, and McQuarrie said, 'I need you to move from here to here in just a few seconds,'" Cruise recalled at a recent Tokyo press conference. "I told him, 'That's not possible.' He came back with, 'Alright, then I want you to do this and this.' Again, I had to say, 'I really can't do that.'"
"It was a straightforward maneuver," McQuarrie remarked about the challenging stunt. "Every idea I proposed, he responded with, 'No, that's physically impossible.' I'm not used to hearing 'can't' from him."
For Cruise, whose experience with high-risk sequences in the franchise spans years, his instincts immediately signaled the limitations. "I explained that the airspeed alone made quick movements on the wing unfeasible," the actor noted. He described giving McQuarrie a "20-minute tutorial" to clarify the physical constraints. "You're bound by the aircraft's velocity and the intense wind force—it was absolutely punishing. I finally told him, 'The best way to understand is to try it yourself. Get on the plane, step onto the wing, and experience that pressure. So, I ended up training him."
McQuarrie, as it turned out, thoroughly enjoyed the session. "It was fantastic, really," he said. "Yes, a lot of fun. I'd do it again without hesitation." Cruise also mentioned that he had prepared for this specific stunt over several years, emphasizing that selecting the appropriate aircraft was crucial to its execution.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning will debut at the Cannes Film Festival, running from May 13 to May 24, 2025. Following the premiere, the film will launch in theaters globally on May 23, 2025.
