If you're a fan of *The Fantastic Four*, you'll agree that the series has reached heights not seen in years, thanks to the creative genius of writer Ryan North and his team. Their work has been nothing short of spectacular, and it's no surprise that Marvel is eager to capitalize on this renewed interest with the upcoming release of *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*. As the summer blockbuster approaches, the stage is set for the FF to capture an even broader audience.
Marvel is set to relaunch *Fantastic Four* in July, but rest assured, Ryan North remains at the helm. This new volume introduces North to artist Humberto Ramos (*The Amazing Spider-Man*), who brings a fresh perspective to the iconic First Family. Together, they will weave a tale exploring the aftermath of the *One World Under Doom* crossover, as well as navigating the complexities of time travel.
To learn more about this exciting relaunch and how it offers a seamless entry point for new readers, IGN had the chance to speak with North. Before diving into the interview, take a look at an exclusive preview of the first issue in the gallery below, and continue reading to uncover how the series will delve deeper into the FF as both a family and a group of friends.

Renumbering the series might seem unusual, especially given that North is staying on board and the direction remains consistent. However, the decision aligns perfectly with Marvel’s strategy to appeal to curious newcomers following the release of the *Fantastic Four* film. “Comics have a unique opportunity to expand,” explains North. “There are countless potential fans who believe comics aren’t for them, but there’s a wealth of content they’d enjoy—if only they knew where to begin.” By offering a fresh #1, Marvel hopes to eliminate one of the barriers keeping potential readers away.
The most significant change in the relaunch comes with Ramos joining as the artist. North shares that their collaboration began well before the project officially launched. “We met at San Diego Comic-Con and discussed the characters extensively,” he notes. “Humberto is incredibly collaborative and enthusiastic, bringing every idea to life with energy and flair. It’s been tough sitting on all this incredible artwork without sharing it!”
Ramos’ reputation for artistic speed works in North’s favor. Knowing Ramos will handle the visuals consistently allows North to tailor his scripts specifically for the artist. “I’ve worked with many talented artists, but not always knowing who they were while writing,” says North. “Writing for Humberto has been refreshing, as I can create content that reflects both of our visions seamlessly.”
Although the standalone adventure format remains intact, North plans to enhance the overarching narrative. “Each issue will still be self-contained, providing a satisfying experience for new readers,” he explains. “But I’m leaning more into interconnected arcs to keep longtime fans engaged.”
North emphasizes the importance of portraying the FF as friends rather than just family. “The distinction lies in choice,” he elaborates. “While two members—Johnny and Sue—are biologically related, the others opt to join them. It’s akin to choosing family—you work at maintaining those bonds. This dynamic adds depth to their relationships.”
With the series launching mid-*One World Under Doom*, balancing accessibility for new readers and continuity for existing ones posed a challenge. North addresses this head-on by crafting a Doctor Doom-centric story that ties directly into the crossover events. “We’re addressing the lingering effects of Doom’s actions while introducing new sci-fi elements,” he says. “This ensures new readers aren’t lost, while old fans remain invested.”
The transformation of Ben Grimm back into The Thing during the crossover raised intriguing questions. North reassures us that the resolution will appear in the final moments of the previous arc, ensuring no loose threads carry over. “I aim to make the series welcoming to all,” he adds. “Even with decades of history, I ensure every reader feels included.”
*Fantastic Four* #1 hits shelves on July 9, coinciding with the theatrical release of *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*. Look forward to the second issue debuting on August 13, featuring Sue stranded in the future, Reed awaiting rescue in the past, and Doom unveiling his ultimate secret weapon.
