Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor
Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is reportedly underperforming, falling short of sales expectations and being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. This news follows a significant drop in Ubisoft's stock price after the August 2024 launch.
While initial reviews were positive, player feedback highlighted dissatisfaction with the game's combat and stealth mechanics. Although Ubisoft addressed these concerns with updates, the changes proved insufficient to significantly boost sales. The game's underperformance was acknowledged by Ubisoft in September.
Adding to the disappointment, a recent report by VGC and industry journalist Christopher Dring indicates that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a critically acclaimed single-player title, has surpassed Star Wars Outlaws in sales figures, though precise numbers remain undisclosed. Further illustrating the game's struggles, Star Wars Outlaws ranked only 47th in European video game sales for 2024.
Several factors likely contributed to Jedi: Survivor's success. As a sequel to the popular Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it benefited from established brand recognition and positive critical reception upon its April 2023 release. A subsequent update expanding availability to PS4 and Xbox One further fueled its popularity.
Conversely, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The November 2024 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming Spring 2025 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune" (featuring Hondo Ohnaka) aim to revitalize interest. However, whether these additions will be enough to significantly improve the game's performance remains uncertain.
