The Star Wars saga continues to expand, offering fans new adventures even beyond the events of The Rise of Skywalker. While anticipation builds for Shawn Levy's upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter, enthusiasts can delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker universe sooner through the newly announced young adult novel, Star Wars: The Last Order.
Revealed by Penguin Random House, this novel promises to enrich the lore around John Boyega's beloved character Finn and Naomi Ackie's resistance ally Jannah, both introduced in The Rise of Skywalker. Authored by Kwame Mbalia, The Last Order picks up where the film left off. The official synopsis teases an intriguing plot: "Following the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime."
This marks the first Star Wars project to explore the aftermath of Rise of Skywalker, setting the stage for further developments in the universe. While Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter remains eagerly awaited, it's clear that Lucasfilm is keen on expanding the post-Rise of Skywalker narrative through various media. Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm's president, shared insights on the timeline during a February interview with Deadline, stating, “It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out.” Jonathan Tropper, the writer for Levy's project, echoed this enthusiasm in a recent Screen Rant interview, expressing hope that the film would arrive "sooner than you think." The excitement was further amplified at Star Wars Celebration Japan, where the film's release date was confirmed for May 28, 2027, with Ryan Gosling set to star.
