Rumors are swirling that Red Dead Redemption 2 might be making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 by the end of 2025. Alongside this, a next-gen upgrade for the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S is also reportedly in the works. According to GameReactor, sources close to Rockstar Games have hinted at a Switch 2 port of this Wild West adventure, as well as a "next-gen upgrade patch" aimed at enhancing the experience on current-gen consoles. While specifics remain under wraps, the sources suggest that both the port and the upgrade could be available as early as later this year.
This buzz is further supported by Nintenduo, which claims that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 could hit the market within Take-Two's current financial year, ending on March 31, 2026. It's still up in the air whether the game will be available solely as a digital download or if a physical edition will be offered as well.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 first launched in 2018, it was hailed as a "masterpiece" by IGN's review, earning a perfect score of 10/10. The review praised the game as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era." Given this acclaim, the prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to the Switch 2 might not come as a huge surprise. In a recent Q&A with investors after Take-Two's latest financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform. He highlighted the improved support for third-party publishers this time around, noting, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform."
Zelnick elaborated on Take-Two's strategy, stating, "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."
Take-Two's Lineup for Nintendo Switch 2
Specifically, Take-Two is set to bring Civilization 7 on the launch day of June 5, along with titles from the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (though exact games and release dates are yet to be confirmed), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. These choices aren't surprising, given that Take-Two already publishes these franchises on the original Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door is open for more releases, particularly from Take-Two's back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make it to the Switch 2, there's potential for games like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 to join the lineup.
