To access major features like playing Nintendo Switch 1 titles, the Nintendo Switch 2 requires a mandatory day-one system update.
The console has now launched in regions where it has officially become June 5, 2025, and Nintendo has released the launch day update for download.
This update is essential to play a wide variety of Nintendo Switch 2 software, including backward-compatible Switch 1 games, online-only titles, Virtual Game Cards, and physical releases on Game-key cards that require additional data downloads.
As many Nintendo fans anticipated, early adopters confirmed the Switch 2 needed a significant firmware patch to enable core functionality before launch day.
While most users should have no trouble downloading the update, it's important to note for those eager to start gaming immediately upon unboxing.
Why is the update necessary? Nintendo was likely finalizing the Switch 2's system software while manufacturing the hardware months ago.
Nintendo also maintained secrecy around the console's features by restricting early access, even as some units surfaced ahead of schedule. Releasing the day-one patch exclusively at launch minimized early exposure to the system's interface and gameplay.
It's still surprising, however, to see Nintendo officially list the ability to play games among the patch notes for the Switch 2.
