MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5

MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

Warner Bros. Games has announced the upcoming closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, following the completion of its fifth season. The game will officially shut down on May 30, 2025.

Season 5: A Final Farewell

The official MultiVersus (X) account revealed on January 31, 2025, that Season 5 will be the game's last. This final season, running from February 4, 2025, to May 30, 2025, will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes). These new characters, along with all other Season 5 content, will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's end, MultiVersus will be removed from all digital storefronts (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store). No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.

Offline Play Option

A silver lining for dedicated players: MultiVersus will retain a local gameplay mode, allowing offline play against AI or with up to three friends. To access this, players must download the latest version of the game between February 4th and May 30th, 2025. Upon logging in, a local save file will be automatically generated, preserving all earned and purchased content.

Real-money transactions ceased on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until Season 5 concludes.

A Brief History and Unexpected Closure

Initially launched in July 2022 as a free-to-play public beta, MultiVersus quickly gained traction as a Super Smash Bros.-style fighter with a unique 2v2 focus. A relaunch in May 2024 incorporated improvements (new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, and revised currency systems), but these updates weren't enough to overcome persistent issues such as technical problems, frequent disconnections, and player concerns regarding microtransactions. Reportedly, player counts dropped significantly in July 2024.

By the time of its May 30th shutdown, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support.

MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
