George R.R. Martin has hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie, but acknowledges a significant hurdle to his potential involvement. The Game of Thrones creator conceived the world and history for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco heavily featured Martin's contribution in promotional materials, crediting both Hidetaka Miyazaki and Martin for the game's world creation.
While sidestepping questions about an Elden Ring sequel, Martin revealed to IGN Fan Fest 2025 that discussions about an Elden Ring film adaptation are underway. This isn't the first time he's alluded to such a project; FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has also expressed openness to an adaptation, but only with a "very strong partner" to handle production, acknowledging FromSoftware's lack of experience in film production.
However, Martin admitted that his extensive work on The Winds of Winter might significantly limit his participation in an Elden Ring movie. He's currently several years behind schedule on this long-awaited novel, impacting his ability to take on additional projects. The prolonged delay of The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, has been a source of much fan speculation and concern, with the last book published in 2011. Even Martin himself acknowledges the possibility that the book might never be completed.
Regarding his contribution to Elden Ring, Martin explained his role in world-building, collaborating with FromSoftware to establish the game's historical context and backstory, several millennia prior to the game's present. He worked extensively on the magic system and runes, and the team iterated on his ideas over several sessions. Martin confirmed that not all of his created material was used in the game, leaving potential for future installments or adaptations. He drew parallels to Tolkien's extensive world-building, noting that even major fantasy epics contain vast amounts of background material beyond what's depicted onscreen.
