"All LEGO Chess Sets: A Complete History"

Author : Ava Update:Apr 14,2025

LEGO patented its signature "binding brick" in 1958, but it wasn't until nearly 50 years later, in 2005, that LEGO released its first official chess build. This fact was a surprise to me, even as someone who spends a significant amount of time exploring and learning about LEGO. The delay in introducing a LEGO Chess set seemed puzzling, considering its potential appeal to a broad audience.

In 2005, LEGO's primary focus was on children, and it wasn't until 2007 that the company began catering more to its adult fanbase. The concept of LEGO lifestyle branding, where brick-built items blend seamlessly into everyday living spaces, didn't gain momentum until around 2020. What we now consider commonplace in 2025 was revolutionary back in 2005 when the first LEGO chess set was introduced. Prior to that, most LEGO builds were miniature playsets rather than replicas of real-world objects.

Below is a comprehensive list of all LEGO Chess Sets released to date, ordered by their release. There have been 12 sets in total, with only one currently available for purchase in 2025. For those interested in other chess sets, you might want to explore our guide to the best overall chess sets.
