Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the mobile action-RPG that was set to bring a fresh chapter in the beloved franchise to smartphones. Originally scheduled for a 2024 release, Missing-Link was designed as a GPS-based experience set in the mysterious realm of Scala ad Caelum, expanding the ongoing battle against the Heartless with an original story.
In a recent [ttpp], Square Enix issued a formal statement through the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing deep regret to fans who had eagerly anticipated its launch. The company explained that the decision to cancel stemmed from internal evaluations indicating challenges in delivering a service that would maintain long-term player satisfaction. While the statement did not specify the exact difficulties encountered during development, it emphasized the team's dedication and the tough nature of the decision.
"We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service," the message read. "Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by many players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time."
The statement also extended gratitude to those who participated in beta testing and supported the project throughout its development cycle.
Despite this disappointing news, there is still hope for Kingdom Hearts enthusiasts. In the same announcement, Square Enix confirmed that the Kingdom Hearts series will continue, revealing that development is actively underway on Kingdom Hearts 4. This marks the first official update on the title in several months, following only a brief tease earlier in the year.
Series director Tetsuya Nomura has previously hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will begin steering the long-running narrative toward its eventual conclusion—an exciting prospect for fans who have followed the saga across nearly two decades and nearly 20 titles.
Though details remain scarce, Square Enix urged fans to stay tuned for future updates, reaffirming its commitment to delivering a meaningful and satisfying finale to the overarching story.
