When you begin your journey in Stardew Valley, you get to choose either a cat or a dog to join you on your farm as your first pet. However, with the latest update, you can now have more than one pet. To unlock this feature, you need to reach the maximum friendship level with your current pet.
Start by ensuring that your pet always has a full bowl of water. You can fill it with your Watering Can daily, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically.

Additionally, make sure to pet your animal once each day. You'll know you've successfully done this when a heart bubble appears above their head. Keep an eye on your pet's friendship meter in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.
Once the meter is full, Marnie will send you a notice via mail, informing you about the opportunity to adopt more pets from her shop, located south of your farm. If you've managed to avoid adopting a pet in your first year, you'll still receive this notice at the start of Year 2.

Upon receiving Marnie's notice, head to her shop during her open hours (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). At the counter, select the "Adopt Pets" option to view a list of available Pet Licenses. You can choose from 12 different licenses, which include five variations of dogs and cats, plus two types of turtles. Each license comes with a price tag, so make sure you have enough gold.

After selecting your new pets, your next step is to visit Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These bowls are crucial as they not only provide water but also serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing them from running away due to neglect. Each Pet Bowl costs 5,000g and requires 25 x Hardwood, which you can obtain with a Copper Axe or better. It's advisable to buy these bowls before adopting your new pets to maintain their friendship levels.

You can also buy optional pet supplies at Marnie's Ranch, such as Doghouses for outdoor use and Cat Trees for indoor spaces. These items are purely decorative and do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
