Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, who once contemplated retirement, has expressed a renewed passion to develop a new game as a spiritual successor to the iconic Final Fantasy 6. Dive into the details of his upcoming project and the latest updates on its development.
Final Fantasy Creator To Develop His Final Game Again
The Successor To Final Fantasy 6
Hironobu Sakaguchi, the visionary behind the Final Fantasy series, is set to embark on a new adventure inspired by Final Fantasy 6. Following the success of his latest release, Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially launched in 2021, Sakaguchi shared in an interview with The Verge that he initially intended Fantasian to be his swan song. Yet, the joy of collaborating with his talented team has reignited his passion, leading him to pursue a project that he hopes will serve as "a successor to Final Fantasy VI."
Despite earlier plans to retire, Sakaguchi found the experience of working with his team on Fantasian so rewarding that he couldn't bear to step away. He is now eager to collaborate with the same team on a new endeavor, aiming to "create something old but new at the same time." Sakaguchi describes this upcoming game as "part two of my farewell note."
Development On Sakaguchi’s Latest Project
In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Sakaguchi confirmed he is actively working on a new project. He mentioned that it's been about a year since he completed the script, and he anticipates reaching a significant milestone in roughly two years. The recent trademark filing by Mistwalker for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" has sparked speculation among fans about a possible sequel to Fantasian.
Sakaguchi emphasized that his new project will echo the style of his previous fantasy RPGs. While no official title or detailed information has been released yet, the gaming community is eagerly awaiting further announcements.
Reuniting With Square Enix For FANTASIAN Neo Dimension
Mistwalker partnered with Square Enix to expand the reach of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, bringing it to PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch in December 2024. Initially exclusive to Apple Arcade upon its 2021 release, Fantasian has been hailed as one of the platform's top games.
Reflecting on his collaboration with Square Enix, Sakaguchi noted, "It’s the place where I started my career, so coming full circle through the game I envisioned to be my final work was definitely a fascinating experience." Sakaguchi's journey began with Square in 1983, where he directed the first Final Fantasy game in 1987 and produced titles up to Final Fantasy 11. After leaving Square in 2003 to found Mistwalker, he created acclaimed titles like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. His most recent project before FANTASIAN Neo Dimension was Fantasian in 2021.
Despite this recent partnership, Sakaguchi remains focused on new creations rather than revisiting past glories, stating he has "switched to a consumer rather than a creator" when it comes to his previous works.
