Square Enix has announced modifications to the Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) Alliance Raid reward system in response to player input, with changes taking effect in Patch 7.16. Starting January 21, adventurers will be able to exchange surplus Clouddark Demimateria 1 for the more versatile Demimateria 2 variant.
This challenging 24-player encounter, introduced December 24 alongside Patch 7.15, reimagines the climactic battle against The Cloud of Darkness from A Realm Reborn's World of Darkness raid. The encounter incorporates mechanics from Shadowbringers' Eden raid series, where players previously confronted an alternate version of this voidsent entity. Successful raid completions currently reward both tiers of Clouddark Demimateria, with bonus quantities of Demimateria 2 distributed based on first-time clear participation.

The upcoming adjustment will allow players holding excess Demimateria 1 to convert them into their more valuable counterparts. While Square Enix hasn't disclosed specific exchange rates, this quality-of-life improvement will facilitate acquisition of the sought-after Dais of Darkness mount (75 Demimateria 2) and A Half Times Two hairstyle (49 Demimateria 2). These changes will implement following a scheduled maintenance period on January 21.
Clouddark Demimateria Exchange Coming in FFXIV Patch 7.16
- Responding to player demand, FFXIV will implement a Demimateria conversion system in the January update.
- Conversion rates between Demimateria tiers remain unspecified pending the patch's release.
- Premium cosmetic rewards including hairstyles and mounts will become more accessible through the new exchange mechanism.
- The development team continues monitoring community feedback for potential future refinements.
Since these vanity items remain tradable on the Market Board, their economic values may fluctuate significantly post-update. The adjustments reflect Square Enix's commitment to responsive game design, with potential for additional changes in subsequent patches. Patch 7.16 marks FFXIV's inaugural 2025 content update, primarily featuring the conclusion to the Dawntrail Role Quest storyline.
Players anticipating significant Job adjustments should note that major balancing changes won't arrive until Patch 7.2. As the development roadmap includes further raid content throughout 2025, community feedback will continue shaping the game's evolving endgame ecosystem.
