Rumors are swirling that the popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV), might be making its way to mobile devices. A gaming industry insider, Kurakasis, alleges that Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on a mobile port.
A Spotty Mobile History
While this isn't Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy games, their past attempts have yielded mixed results. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, while decent, didn't quite resonate with many fans, and Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia ultimately shut down. Adapting a complex MMORPG like FFXIV for mobile is a significant challenge.
Unconfirmed, But Not Impossible
It's crucial to remember that this information remains unverified. Square Enix hasn't officially commented. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent hint at the possibility. In 2018, the companies discussed a content partnership, and in 2021, then-president Yosuke Matsuda alluded to several joint projects.
The leak provides no timeframe, leaving the project's status uncertain. A formal announcement may still be some time away.
The Mobile Challenge
Successfully translating FFXIV's intricate mechanics to a mobile platform without compromising the gameplay depth that fans cherish is a considerable hurdle. A simplified, less engaging version could easily disappoint the fanbase.
