Although the game was first hinted at in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex opened signups for alpha testing, labeling it as a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The official unveiling as RuneScape: Dragonwilds occurred on March 31, 2025.

The developers are targeting an official release in early 2026, emphasizing their commitment to delivering a polished and engaging experience. Jagex Executive Producer Jesse America highlighted that Dragonwilds is a unique addition to the RuneScape franchise, designed with fans in mind. Early Access Roadmap Revealed
Jagex unveiled an exciting early access roadmap, outlining their plans for the game during this period. The highlight is the introduction of a new region, Fellhollow, a mystical land caught between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This region is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld. Players will embark on new quests with the iconic character Death, exploring new lore, acquiring new gear, and enjoying new music. Additionally, new skills for magic, ranged, and farming will be introduced, along with new enemy types like Lesser Dragons, dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, and a creative mode.
