Midnight Society, the game studio co-founded by popular streamer Guy 'Dr. Disrespect' Beahm, has announced its closure after three years of operation. The studio, which also included industry veterans like Robert Bowling and Quinn Delhyo from games such as Call of Duty and Halo, revealed the news through a post on X. They wrote, "Today we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers." Alongside this announcement, the studio reached out to the gaming community, asking if any other studios are hiring and could offer employment opportunities to their team members.
Midnight Society's flagship project was Deadrop, a free-to-play FPS game set in a fictional universe where "the 80s never ended." The game promised a unique PvPvE extraction shooter experience, featuring characters with Daft Punk-like helmets wielding an assortment of guns and swords. Despite targeting a 2024 release, the project missed its deadline, and development continued until the studio's closure this year.
The studio parted ways with Beahm in 2024 following revelations that he had exchanged messages with a minor via Twitch's Whispers feature, some of which were deemed inappropriate. Despite this split, Midnight Society continued to work on Deadrop until the decision to shut down was made.
The closure of Midnight Society adds to the growing list of studios facing closure or layoffs in the current challenging climate of the gaming industry. Companies like Ubisoft, BioWare, Phoenix Labs, and others have also been affected by these difficult times.
