Get ready, Guardian — Bungie has revealed what’s next for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, with two new expansions and major seasonal and core updates coming to all players, both paying and free, under the banner of "Year of Prophecy."
Year of Prophecy marks the first year to feature four "major content beats," including two paid expansions and two free updates. The expansions require purchase, while the updates are available to everyone.
First is Rite of the Nine, a "fresh take on dungeon diving for both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike," now live at no extra cost. Though the dungeons — Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep — will feel familiar, even the most experienced Guardians will find "unique twists," including renewed encounters with Orin and revamped dungeon weapons.
On July 15, the new expansion Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate launches — a "multiyear saga unfolding across multiple expansions." This paid expansion brings back the Nine, ancient and enigmatic beings predating the Traveler, as two characters step into the spotlight: new ally Lodi and Warlock Vanguard Ikora.Set on the new destination Kepler, described as "inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeon and destination design, encouraging deep exploration, mystery, and player-driven discovery," The Edge of Fate introduces new enemies, weapons, gear, and "destination-specific abilities."
Also on July 15, "major core game innovations" arrive, including redesigned armor and gear systems to foster "richer buildcrafting opportunities" and a new activity hub called the Portal.
"Players will now easily choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly added Solo Ops," Bungie explained. "Fireteam Ops and Pinnacle Ops emphasize quick fireteam action and extended cooperative experiences, while Solo Ops are crafted specifically for solo players seeking short, self-contained sessions without requiring a fireteam."
"Additionally, players can customize activities to match their preferred playstyle and target rewards. 50 brand-new modifiers offer deeper gameplay customization and heightened challenges, while curated activity rotations ensure there’s always something fresh to pursue."

On September 9, the second major update — Ash & Iron — launches alongside the second expansion of the year, Renegades. Then, on December 2, Renegades fully releases. Finally, March 3 brings the Shadow & Order major update.Destiny 2: Renegades, the second expansion in Year of Prophecy, draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," blending Destiny’s signature storytelling and gameplay with themes and elements from the iconic sci-fi franchise.
This news comes as a welcome relief to many Destiny 2 players following Bungie’s July 2024 layoff of 220 staff — 17% of its total workforce — less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs.
Of course, Destiny 2 isn’t the only project keeping Bungie busy. Marathon was revealed in May 2023 as a reboot of the classic Bungie franchise, but it wasn’t until last month that we saw our first real glimpse. In IGN's Marathon hands-on preview, we wrote: "After playing enough Marathon to get a pretty good feel for it in its alpha state, I’m already fairly confident it’ll scratch the Bungie PvP itch that’s been left unscratched for a number of years now. Here’s hoping they’ll knock it out of the park when it comes to PC and consoles in September."
