Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana features a variety of intense boss battles, with Dularn, The Creeping Shadow, being the first major challenge players will face. As the initial boss, Dularn can feel like a significant jump in difficulty, making multiple attempts common before successfully defeating him. However, once players understand his attack patterns and strategies, this fight becomes manageable and even brief.
How to Beat Dularn in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana
At the start of the battle, Dularn surrounds himself with an impenetrable energy barrier that nullifies all incoming attacks. During this phase, the focus should be on survival as he unleashes waves of projectiles. Once the barrier dissipates, players have a window to strike and deal damage.
It’s important to note that Dularn’s health scales depending on the selected difficulty. If players find themselves struggling, they may consider backtracking to level up or improve equipment. However, since Dularn is not an optional boss, players must eventually overcome him to progress through the game.
Avoid engaging Dularn while his barrier is active. Touching him during this time results in damage, which can quickly lead to defeat if players attempt to force an attack.
Dularn's Sword Attacks
Dularn uses sword-based attacks that vary in pattern and complexity. Understanding these patterns is crucial for avoiding damage:
- He summons swords above him that strike downward toward the player.
- He forms an X-shape with swords that home in on the player.
- He launches a straight line of swords directly at the player.
While his barrier is active, the best strategy involves circling around Dularn in wide arcs. This movement helps avoid the initial two types of sword attacks. Jumping over incoming swords provides an additional layer of safety. For the straight-line sword attack, timing a jump just before impact allows players to evade effectively.
Once the barrier drops, Dularn becomes vulnerable. After receiving a series of hits, he teleports away and reappears with a new barrier. Always keep your distance when he re-emerges to avoid taking damage from the barrier’s activation.
Dularn's Wave Blasts
In addition to sword attacks, Dularn launches two types of projectile waves:
Fireballs
Dularn fires a volley of fireballs that can be avoided by either dashing between them or jumping over individual projectiles. Combining both movement and jumping increases evasion success.
Arching Slash
This powerful blue slash covers the entire screen with no gaps, making it essential to jump over it to avoid damage. These wave attacks often occur right before Dularn becomes vulnerable again, signaling an opportunity to close the distance and land hits.
Mastering this boss fight comes down to recognizing attack patterns rather than grinding for levels or gear upgrades.
Rewards for Beating Dularn in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana
Upon defeating Dularn, players gain access to the room located directly below the battlefield. Inside, they’ll find the Ignis Bracelet—a magical accessory that enables the player to throw fireballs. This item quickly becomes a core part of combat strategy and opens up new gameplay possibilities.
