Chris Evans, known for his iconic role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly debunked rumors about his return in the upcoming film "Avengers: Doomsday" or any other MCU projects. In an interview with Esquire, Evans directly addressed a report from Deadline suggesting his comeback alongside Robert Downey Jr., stating, "That's not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years, ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."
The speculation about Evans' return was fueled by comments from Anthony Mackie, who succeeded Evans as Captain America. Mackie mentioned to Esquire that he hadn't seen a script for "Avengers: Doomsday" but was informed by his manager that Evans might be returning. However, Mackie clarified that he had spoken to Evans directly, who confirmed he was not considering a comeback, saying, "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired'."
While Evans has stepped away from his role as Captain America, he did make a brief return to the MCU universe by reprising his role as Johnny Storm in "Deadpool & Wolverine." This appearance, however, was more of a comedic side role compared to his central role in the MCU as Captain America.
The MCU is currently navigating through some uncertainty following the departure of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang and was set to be the franchise's next major antagonist akin to Thanos. Majors was dropped from the MCU after being found guilty of assault and harassment. In response, Marvel has announced that Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., will take over as the new big bad. This shift has sparked theories about the potential return of other original Avengers, though no official confirmations have been made.
In other MCU developments, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, has confirmed that his character will not appear in "Avengers: Doomsday" but will have a "central role" in the sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars." The film will be directed by the Russo Brothers, known for their work on previous Avengers films, and is expected to delve further into the multiverse narrative, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also set to appear.
