The writer of the Wesley Snipes Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his willingness to help Marvel Studios with Mahershala Ali's stalled MCU reboot of the iconic vampire hunter. Despite the project being announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2019, Blade has faced numerous setbacks, resulting in its removal from Marvel's release schedule just seven months ago, with no new date set.
Recent statements from those involved in the project paint a picture of a production that has fallen apart. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to compose music for the film, shared on social media that the project is now far from realization. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who was to design for a 1920s-set version of the film, confirmed the collapse of the production. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was attached to star alongside Ali, also discussed the project's derailment, expressing disappointment over its failure to come to fruition despite initial enthusiasm and inclusivity in its development.
Goyer, in an interview with ScreenRant, expressed his confusion and eagerness to contribute to the reboot, questioning the delays and expressing his love for the character. Marvel chief Kevin Feige has reiterated the studio's commitment to bringing Blade to the MCU, emphasizing their dedication to Mahershala Ali's portrayal of the character, despite the ongoing uncertainties.
In related news, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, which featured Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade in a cameo, was a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, star of Deadpool, praised Snipes' original Blade films for paving the way for the superhero genre, suggesting a send-off film for Snipes' Blade similar to Hugh Jackman's Logan. Reynolds also mentioned being in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble movie, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters.
