Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached a pivotal moment with the release of its long-awaited final patch on April 15, 2025. This update, Patch 8, marks the end of major updates for the acclaimed RPG. Following its release, BG3 experienced a notable increase in player count, soaring from around 60,000 concurrent players to over 169,000, positioning it just outside Steam's top 10 most played games.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared his thoughts on the player surge via Twitter (X) on April 22, attributing it to the game's robust mod support. This support allows Larian to shift focus towards their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to explore new creative territories.
In light of this, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.
