The Hang is a captivating musical instrument in the idiophone class, originally created in Switzerland. This unique instrument is crafted from two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheet that are meticulously glued together at the rim. This construction leaves the inside hollow, resulting in a distinctive 'UFO shape' that adds to its allure.
The top side, known as the "Ding," features a central 'note' hammered into it, surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields' that are also hammered into the surface. This design allows for a range of melodic possibilities. On the other hand, the bottom side, called the "Gu," presents a plain surface with a rolled hole in the center. When the rim of the Gu is struck, it produces a tuned note, adding another dimension to the instrument's sound. The Hang is also referred to as a handpan, a term that highlights its handheld nature and the way it is played.
The Hang operates on some of the same fundamental physical principles as a steelpan, yet it is ingeniously modified to function as a Helmholtz resonator. The development of the Hang was the culmination of extensive research on the steelpan and other instruments, showcasing a deep understanding of acoustics and materials science.
