In this variant, knocking is not allowed. Both players aim to form Gin, and the first to do so wins the Straight Gin Rummy game.

In this popular variation, the value of the initial face-up card sets the maximum deadwood count allowed for knocking. For example, if a seven is revealed, you must reduce your unmatched points to seven or below to knock.
