Played with a 24-card deck, Euchre pits two teams of two against each other. When a team "orders up trump," they declare their intention to win the majority of tricks. Winning three or four tricks earns one point, while taking all five earns two. Failing to win three tricks ("being euchred") costs the team two points, awarded to their opponents.
A confident player can "go alone," attempting to win all tricks without a partner. Success yields four points, while winning three or four nets only one. Being euchred while playing alone still only results in a two-point penalty for the opposing team.
The core rule: you're never forced to play trump unless it's the led suit, but you must follow suit if possible.
