DOT'S HOME: A Journey Through Time and Family History
DOT'S HOME is an immersive, single-player, 2D narrative-driven video game that follows the journey of a young Black woman living in her grandmother's cherished home in Detroit. The game takes players on a poignant trip through time, allowing them to relive pivotal moments in her family's history. Here, the themes of race, place, and home intersect, presenting players with challenging decisions that reflect real-life dilemmas.
As an interactive experience, DOT'S HOME provides a unique perspective on the systemic issues that shape our understanding of race and place. Players are placed in scenarios that require them to navigate the complexities of redlining, urban renewal, and gentrification. These choices compel players to ponder the fundamental question: "How did your family end up where they are today, and how much choice did they really have in that journey?"
DOT'S HOME is a product of the Rise-Home Stories project, a collaborative effort between multimedia storytellers and housing and land justice advocates. Over the course of three years, this team has worked to reimagine the past, present, and future of our communities by reshaping the narratives surrounding them.
